Welcome to Farm City, a new 'city' that as the name implies, has a close connection with agriculture. Farm City is a concept under construction by many professionals around the globe and can be seen as a strategic introduction to the combination of Industrial Ecology and Metropolitan Agriculture. Farm City is a research and design process and has developed into five proposals in the Rotterdam region.

Developments in the field of demography, industry, environment and food compel us to investigate the relationship between food production and industrial activities. The current issues such as resource shortage, rising food prices and unhealthy and environmental unsound practices will have to be radically restructured. Through clever exchanges of materials and energy, Farm City as a functional and sustainable producer of food and energy, takes a step into the future.

Recreation and education are key-aspects of the concept. Farm City brings food production closer to the consumer which stimulates conscious behavior. The Farm City approach is in fact more than a straight-forward vision, it is practice-oriented and endeavors to bring the reality of the contemporary food and energy issues/solutions closer to society.
